The National War Museum is located in the Fort Saint Elmo in Valletta. It is one of the most popular museums on the island. From 1975 to 2014, his collections focused mainly on the First and Second World Wars. In 2015 it was renovated, and its collection now contains exhibits from the Bronze Age to 2004.
The museum was located at the Old Drill Hall in Lower Saint Elmo. The building was originally a warehouse of gunpowder, around 1853 it was transformed into an armory. During the Second World War, the service of anti-aircraft guns was trained here.
Lower Saint Elmo is the lower part of the Saint Elmo fort, built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This part was built later than the original Upper Saint Elmo and Carafa Enceinte.
The main collection of the museum refers to the Second World War. These are various photographic panels, showing life in Malta during the war, especially the difficulties of everyday civilian life and the destruction caused by aerial bombardments. One of the main elements of the exhibition is the Gloster Sea Gladiator N5520 hull, the only survivor of Hal Far Fighter Flight.
The museum also has Willys Jeep ‘Husky’ used by Dwight Eisenhower before the Allied invasion of Sicily, and by Roosevelt when he visited Malta. George Cross, which Malta was awarded by King George VI in April 1942, is also displayed in the museum. The facility also has a wreck of a broken plane, captured German machine guns, a torpedo, a light mortar and other weapons.
